Chicago Headline Club
Board of Directors Meeting

September 12, 2005

President Meg Tebo called the meeting to order around 5:35 p.m.

Present: Meg, Howard Dubin, Steve Rynkiewicz, Deb Cohen, Andy Schneider, Julia McEvoy, Rob Olmstead, Sandy Jones, Michelle Stevens, Art Menke, Jerry Campagna, Jason Jedlinski, Susan S. Stevens.

Meg appointed Jerry Campagna, presidente of the Daily Herald’s bilingual Reflejos, as a new board member to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Ray Salazar.

President’s report: Meg said at the next meeting (noon Mon. Oct. 3, at the Sun-Times), she will ask the board to OK ordering more reporter’s notebooks. She also will ask the board to decide how delegates to the SPJ convention in Las Vegas will vote. Meg asked Molly McDonough to speak at the board meeting since she is running for SPJ director. Molly will want to hand off Watchdog early next year. Steve will be handing off Lisagor to a new chair, and filling the post quickly is essential because contest entry forms need to go out around Thanksgiving.

Sandy said Andrew Leckey, former Sun-Times staffer and currently director of Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at the American Press Institute, proposed doing Chicago workshops for financial journalists. CHC would host, providing registration, site and probably lunch. Otherwise, free to CHC since grants pay for the workshops. CHC board approved workshops, which Meg said probably would be in late-February or early March.

Deb has continued to explore merchandise sales through cafepress.com. We need good working art for the site and our own identification. She has been checking with artists. We will pay a nominal fee.

Meg said 67 people were registered for the NPR panel after the board meeting. Town Hall Meeting Sept. 20 is being done without reservations because we want to open it to the public. We’ll pay about $250-300 for munchies, splitting the total bill of $500-600 with Loyola. Nitty Gritty Bus Tour reservations are light but might be boosted by the national convention of gay and lesbian journalists here that weekend. Jason said Terry Mutchler event probably will be at the State of Illinois Building. Three tables have been sold for the Lifetime Achievement Dinner.

Deb recently counted 453 members.

Meg said Ilyce Glink, CHC Foundation president, conveyed a reminder about the Book Bash Nov. 17. Ilyce said via e-mail it’s $55 for members, $65 for non-members, but if you buy at the door, expect to spend $75/85. Also, you get a dinner and dessert buffet and a coupon for a free drink.Site: KendallCollegeculinary arts school, near Halsted Streetand Chicago Avenue.
Meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
