The Institute for Independent Journalists: Freelance Business Workshop

This full-day workshop will give freelancers the training and perspective needed to develop a business plan and path to financial and emotional sustainability as an independent journalist. While geared at people with a few years’ experience as entrepreneurs, even experienced journalists will pick up new ideas and tactics to take their practices to the next level — and newbies will understand what to expect in a freelance career. Topics include:

• The 3 P’s model of structuring a freelance portfolio, how to track income and time on the same spreadsheet, and what to negotiate for in addition to higher pay. 
• Effective networking, recruiting anchor clients, identifying your brand and niche, and when to say no. 
• A range of organization, time management, and mental health strategies
