Party Time! Sun. Aug. 27

All are welcome at the Chicago Club Foundation’s annual Les Brownlee Party.

It will be at the home Les shared with his wife, Priscilla Ruth MacDougall, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on that Sunday, a day that is almost always sunny just for us. The address: 537 Judson Ave. in southeast Evanston, where there is plenty of on-street parking.

Remember: “Les Brownlee, Channel 7 Eyewitness News”? He coined the term. Or you might remember Professor Brownlee at Columbia College. Or his byline in the Chicago Daily News, Chicago American and Chicago Defender. Les was the first African-American member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the first black president of the Chicago Headline Club.

We honor Les each year with a $3,000 scholarship to an outstanding Chicago area journalism student. This year’s recipient is Brendan Pedersen of DePaul University. Raising money for this scholarship comes in large part from your $20 contribution at the summer party. In return, you will have lots of food, drink and good conversation with journalists.

If you cannot attend, you can still contribute and get a tax deduction. Send your check, payable to the Chicago Headline Club Foundation, to CHCF Treasurer Howard Dubin, Manufacturers News, 1633 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201.

If you donate $100, you will receive a complimentary copy of “Les Brownlee: The Autobiography of a Pioneering African-American Journalist.” Copies will be on sale at the party.
