Mark your calendars! Sun. Aug. 18, 2019
Join your friends and colleagues at the Chicago Club Foundation’s annual Les Brownlee Party Sun. Aug. 18.
We will celebrate journalism from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the home Les shared with his wife, Priscilla Ruth MacDougall, at 537 Judson Ave. in southeast Evanston. No RSVPs needed. Lots of parking.
We will share fond memories of “Les Brownlee, Channel 7 Eyewitness News.” You might have known him as Professor Brownlee at Columbia College. Or you might remember his byline in the Chicago Daily News, Chicago’s American and Chicago Defender. Or in his role as a journalism leader. Les was the first African-American member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the first black president of the Chicago Headline Club.
We honor Les each year with a $5,000 scholarship to an outstanding Chicago area journalism student. This year’s recipient is Mary Norkol of Loyola University. Raising money for this scholarship comes in large part from your $20 contribution at the summer party. In return, you will share lots of good food, drink and conversation with journalists.
If you cannot attend, you can still contribute and receive a tax deduction. Send your check, payable to the Chicago Headline Club Foundation, to CHCF Treasurer Howard Dubin, Manufacturers News, 1633 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201. Think about putting CHCF in your will.
If you donate $100, you will receive a complimentary copy of “Les Brownlee: The Autobiography of a Pioneering African-American Journalist.” Copies will be on sale at the party.
