The Chicago Headline Club, the largest Society of Professional Journalist chapter in the country,

proudly salutes:

Watchdog Award Winners

Dan Mihalopoulos, Robert Becker, Darnell Little, Todd Lighty and Laurie Cohen, Chicago Tribune, “Neighborhoods for Sale”

The Watchdog Award honors Chicago-area news reporting that calls attention to situations in which the public is being harmed or poorly served. The $1,500 award, which includes a $1,500 cash prize, is explicitly designed to encourage stories that stick up for the common person. Committee members sifted through many entries before selecting a nominee that was approved by the Headline Club board.

The cash award and accompanying Watchdog Fund, which gives small grants to aid journalists who are working on investigative projects, are funded by a generous grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. Information about how you can apply for a grant and a list of journalists who have received money can be found on our Watchdog Fund page

Lifetime Achievement Award Winners

ABC7 Andy Shaw

Chicago Sun-Times Fran Spielman

The Chicago Headline Club Lifetime Achievement Award is an annual award recognizing journalists for their extraordinary contribution to the community and/or the profession. The Lifetime Achievement Award honors those journalists who tirelessly work to cover, report, edit and tape the news day in and day out.

Lifetime Award recipients recognized by the Headline Club are journalists known primarily for their work in Chicago or who have worked primarily in Chicago media. Nominees come from various aspects of the media, including print, broadcast, the trade press and Web-based publications. A nominating committee appointed each year by the Headline Club president seeks out nominations both from inside and outside of the journalism community. The Headline Club board then votes to approve each year’s honorees.

LISAGOR AWARD WINNERS

Print, online and broadcast reporters and editors from SPJ chapters in seven cities across the country judged this year’s Lisagor Award entries. Winners were selected for such attributes as enterprise, accuracy, scope, style and impact.
