CHC Foundation Board Minutes for Aug. 14, 2017

CHICAGO HEADLINE CLUB FOUNDATION
Board of directors meeting
Mon. Aug. 14, 2017

President Stan Zoller called the meeting to order at 2:07 p.m. Also present for the phone conference: Rob Hess, Howard Dubin, Sheila Solomon, Bob Chiarito and Susan Stevens.

Brownlee party 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sun. Aug 27: Susan said hostess Priscilla Ruth MacDougall had lined up the food and drink (ribs, chicken, etc.) and was ready to go. Our 2017 Lifetime Achievement winners report they probably cannot attend. A former Les student, Leslie McCloud, might speak. Stan will ask Ben Meyerson as Headline Club president if he wants to speak. If not, Stan will do a welcome address. Harriet Ellis will again play the piano. Sheila, Howard, Stan and Susan will definitely be there to staff the sign-in table. Other groups will be invited. Sheila will try to find our interns to invite them. She and Susan have contacted the Brownlee Scholarship winner.

Stan will check with Ben about a website link for people to contribute to the foundation.

Susan asked that we increase the scholarship and internship awards from $3,000 to at least $5,000, preferably $10,000, since we have the money. CHC for numerous years in the past gave CHCF annual sums. We quit asking, but could ask again. Howard needs to see a budget. Stan will ask for an agenda item for the CHC Sept. 1 meeting.

We might also fund a speaker or something at other groups’ events such as the Scholastic Press Association and National Journalism Organization, which will meet here in a year. Also note that LION, Independent Online, will meet here this fall.

Which organizations will get internship funding next year? Rob said we should start looking at new organizations such as Propublica, City Bureau, and Invisible Institute. Sheila is in charge, and will confer with Dann Gire who handled scholarships the last couple of years.

Meeting adjourned at 2:37 p.m.

Next meeting: sometime in October at Rivet. Stan will Doodle us for a date and time.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan S. Stevens
